In the early 80’s Wendell Phillips purchased the troubled Lockhart oil cooler manufacturing company and began its transformation into a sportbike product distributorship. The foundation of this successful venture was the introduction of the 1982 Kawasaki gpz and subsequent birth of the sportbike industry. Wendell’s background in creating successful motorsport aftermarket products from concept to marketplace coupled with his incredible passion for roadracing fueled the massive expansion of the LPUSA sportbike product line. LPUSA not only developed proprietary products, it became the leading distributor for sportbike product manufactures from around the world. The LPUSA product line grew to over 12,000 selections displayed in a 350 page catalog.

As the product lines and distribution expanded, "Team Lockhart" continued to dominate AMA endurance roadracing. With OEM support from Kawasaki and Suzuki the team racked up two 1st place AMA national titles, one 2nd and one 3rd. After the in-house racing team ceased, LPUSA began sponsoring amateur and pro roadracing teams including Team Kawasaki. They also sponsored roadracing schools, amateur roadracing associations and the AMA Formula Xtreme series.

Wendell Phillips has always supported programs to convert fast street riders into amateur or professional roadracers. The LPUSA "Zero to Hero" program offered free entry fees to any rider taking a CCS track day school and signing up for his/her first race. in addition Wendell auctioned off an LPUSA project bike and donated $19,000 to the Roadracing World’s "Action Fund" to purchase safety air bags. His goal is to move competitive riders off of the street and make the organized roadracing as safe as possible. He was also on the AMA rules committee establishing new guidelines for AMA roadracing class structures.
